Our Purpose

Generations Working Together is the nationally recognised centre of excellence supporting the development and integration of intergenerational work across Scotland.

Since our new Corporate Plan 2020-25 was formulated, the country has experienced a global pandemic which has impacted on all of our lives in ways that we could never have imagined. Intergenerational practice has been massively affected. Most of the established projects and initiatives relied heavily upon face- to-face contact and were set in group contexts. Many projects involved vulnerable older people in care settings. The need to halt the spread of the virus and protect lives brought these to an immediate halt.

We believe that intergenerational work has a unique and significant contribution to make to the recovery process and that our expertise in this arena places GWT in a strong position to support the development of policy and practice.

In 2020 we launched our call for Scotland to become the first intergenerational nation, coinciding with the Scottish Government Election in 2021. The manifesto identifies three areas and fifteen specific calls for action that we believe the Scottish Government elected for 2021 – 2026, and all elected representatives should focus on to help ensure that relationships between generations are strengthened and Scotland becomes more connected and inclusive.

Intergenerational Week Campaign goes Global

In 2021 we took over the leadership of the week from St Monica's Trust. The week took place from the 8th - 14th of March and had over 200 supporters with over 120,000 views across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This year (2022), we go Global involving eleven countries including Australia, America, Canada, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Scotland, Sweden & Wales.

To learn more about the campaign and who is supporting the week and runs from 25th April to the 1st May, please visit the dedicated our supporters page. To register click here.

GWT’s vision and ambitions as an organisation have not changed as a result of the pandemic. We have reviewed our strategic aims and the related actions and believe that they remain current and valid, albeit that our operational priorities and some delivery mechanisms will need to adjust.

  1. To enable Scotland to become an intergenerational nation.
  2. To influence national and local policy in favour of intergenerational practice.
  3. To promote, support and increase innovation in intergenerational practice in Scotland.
  4. To increase participation in intergenerational practice.
  5. To ensure sound governance.
