Intergenerational Living and Learning: Possibilities and Promising Practices

In order to help address the social isolation and loneliness that is so prevalent among people of all ages today, it is important to make intergenerational connections a part of everyday life. Living intergenerationally involves designing spaces and places that intentionally promote cross-age exchange and mutual learning as well as nurture a sense of community.

How can the built environment impact the quality of life across the life course and promote intergenerational understanding and empathy?

This workshop will highlight examples of shared sites, housing communities, public facilities and outdoor spaces that have intergenerational relationship building at their core. We will explore strategies for assessing your organization and community, building partnerships, designing spaces that promote interaction, training staff, and creating ways to foster cross-age intergenerational connection.
