Dementia Friendly Communities in Inverness & Nairn

Funding from LifeScan Scotland is helping our local communities be more supportive to people living with dementia. A dementia friendly community is made up of the whole community including businesses, shop assistants, police, fire, bus drivers, school pupils and many more – people who are committed to working together to help people living with dementia to remain a part of their community and not become apart from it. Thanks to this funding Alzheimer Scotland has appointed a part time Dementia Friendly Community Development worker to focus on this work over the next two years. The project aims to ensure that people with dementia, and their carers, are able to maintain their social networks as well as continuing to use the local facilities such as the banks and shops they have used throughout their lives.

A representative from LifeScan Scotland stated: “LifeScan Scotland is proud to be a part of this unique project within the Highlands. The local focus will lead to solutions bringing benefits to many people affected by dementia.”

Work already underway includes Highland Council Service Point staff, Stagecoach bus drivers and the newest project involving people with dementia in redesigning the signage in the Victorian Market.
