International Certificate in Intergenerational Learning

In partnership with the University of Granada, GWT is looking to recruit participants to take part in a training course which will take approximately 50 hours to complete. This course is carried out completely online and whose fundamental objective is to introduce students to the planning, execution and evaluation of intergenerational projects aimed at achieving greater cooperation between the generations and an increase of social cohesion in our communities. The Course focuses on intergenerational projects as tools for community development.

Partly, the materials for this course come from the work carried out by the project GENerate: The Development of a European Certificate in Intergenerational Learning, which took place between 2012 and 2015 with finding from the European Commission.

In the first edition of the Course, students reported the following:

  • the majority affirmed that the course had completely or mostly met their expectations
  • around 80% recognised that completing the course had increased their professional competency quite a lot or a lot.
  • 9 out of 10 said they would recommend the course to someone else.

As in every course, you will have to carry out evaluation activities. However, once you have completed the training course, you will not receive a final grade, however you will receive an overall assessment of having passed the course.

We believe that the course is connected to one of the most used tools when assessing the qualifications of people – European Qualifications Framework.

The European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF) is a common European frame of reference that enables European countries to compare their qualifications. One of the objectives of the EQF is to facilitate the validation of learning acquired through ways other than official education. Therefore, it is useful to validate the course that you are about to begin.

The EQF is made up of 8 levels of reference based on learning outcomes, that is, what a person really knows and is capable of, regardless of how they have acquired their knowledge and skills.

EQF Implementation in the UK
Implementation of the EQF is voluntary for each country but all EU member states have chosen to proceed. Each member state is asked to nominate a National Coordination Point for EQF implementation. In the UK, because several qualifications frameworks operate, the EQF National Coordination Points (NCPS) for Scotland is the Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework Partnership.

Q. At what level of reference have we placed the Certificate in Intergenerational Projects?

A. In LEVEL 3 . What does this mean? It means that we have estimated that if you have successfully passed the three modules we hope you are able to:

  • Know some of the principles, processes and general concepts of intergenerational work.
  • Use some of the cognitive and practical skills necessary to bring different generations together and foster relationships between them.
  • Act as facilitator or facilitator of intergenerational activities and projects.
  • Adapt your behaviour to the circumstances that arise when trying to relate to people of different generations.

Each participant will receive support from a tutor. Tutors include: Prof. Mariano Sanchez, Dr Alan Hatton Yeo MBE, Alison Clyde & Sandra Brown
